COVID Life – Isolation Series; 2020
Late March to June 2020 was the first lockdown in Australia, and a period where we all faced a lot of uncertainty and enforced time within our own backyards, literally. These works are a documentation of my immediate environment and a wider response to the social isolation and the subsequent simplification of daily life during that period.
My studio and home was surrounded by a few extremely friendly families of Willie Wagtails, of which I photographed up close and personal, resulting in a huge collection over the period. The camera accompanied me on every single walk down my street and local neighbourhood. The resulting painterly images reflect a time of quiet observation and embracing solitude during the unexpected pause. The Wagtails and mail boxes serve as a metaphor for the universal human experience of the imposed restrictions and social isolation and our revised relationships with home.
