Viki Murray is a photographer and mixed media artist. Her work has evolved from classic analogue black and white photography, to fine art digital photo artistry and in recent years, mixed media and stencil art.
She has a vast and diverse body of work, ranging from ethereal digital photo artistry, classic landscape photography, portraiture, Sumi – e ink work to urban stencil art. The stencil art created under the VKM moniker, an extension of her street photography is gritty and grungy and in direct contrast to her more evocative digital work.
Viki has a permanent display and range of originals and reproductions in the John Murray Art Gallery, Lightning Ridge – which she co directs with her partner in life and art John Murray. Her time is divided between the outback opal mining town of Lightning Ridge, Eumundi in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland and since 2019 – extended stints in Melbourne. She has a creative presence and is equally influenced and inspired in all three realities.
Though her work is always evolving, reflecting the very essence of the time and place of wherever she finds herself is at the heart of her creative expression.
“I’ve always absorbed my surroundings through a lens. Even if its just my phone, wherever I am, I’m creating and collecting images. What transpires creatively from that point, is me doing my best to reflect and emulate the very essence of that moment in time. Even if that moment in time is just a very beautiful crack in a wall.”
